About me ...

Although I am self-taught, I have painted for a lifetime!

I was born in Rhodesia in the late 1940's and my family moved around the world whilst I was growing up.  South Africa, Australia, Ireland and England have all played a part in my love of landscape.  It was in Cape Town, South Africa where I developed a love of painting, surfing and cooking. I returned to Britain in the late 1980's due to my Mother's increasing ill health.

Once back in Rochdale, I met Janet and we both wanted to have a more rural life so moved north to Inverness in 1998, and then in 2005 further north to Caithness.

Since moving to Caithness, I have been able to rediscover my love of painting.  We moved to Skirza just over 10 years ago,  and I now have a studio in the garden and can work contentedly on projects.

Blank Canvas

I have never found a blank piece of paper or canvas concerning - it is full of endless possibilities!

Getting the basics in

Once I have the basic sketch drawn I begin to get a base down

Part of the way ...

By now I have most of the colours and tones I will use throughout the painting

Palette of shades

The benefits of oil are that I can take breaks from the painting for a while and the paint is "still good to go"

Adding spray

More detail

Nearly there!

As detail is added, stand back and question what needs adding

Finally ...

An extract of the final painting which I was very happy with!
